Key components

The platform used by Bit is not intended for spot trading. Trading in derivatives, a more complex investing strategy that amplifies gains and losses, serves as its primary purpose.

Many nations, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, prohibit traders from accessing Bybit.

Bybit offers a wide variety of trading and earning products, such as perpetual contracts, liquidity mining, and dual asset trading, even though it only permits spot trading with a few currencies.

Given that this cryptocurrency exchange claims to be able to handle anything, reviewing Bybit can be challenging. On the one hand, it serves as a sort of “crypto ark” where you can store your assets to weather storms like the crash of a cryptocurrency exchange in 2022. On the other hand, it sponsors trading contests like the World Series of Trading, in which competitors compete to make the most money before the finish line.

Although it may seem contradictory, it’s common to find exchanges like Bybit attempting to fulfil multiple roles in the upheaval-filled world of cryptocurrencies. What we know for sure is as follows: Bybit was established in Singapore in 2018 and has since relocated to Dubai. It is prohibited from doing business in the United States and the United Kingdom, and it is risky in a number of other nations.

That said, a crypto exchange may still be well of your time even if it lacks a U.S. licence. Even without a U.S. licence, KuCoin is still among the top trading sites for finding uncommon coins (read more in our KuCoin review). Bybit may be appealing despite any drawbacks due to its distinctive focus on derivatives trading rather than spot trading.

Overview & History of Bybit

Ben Zhou, a former foreign exchange trader who is still Bybit’s owner and CEO, created the Bybit exchange in 2018. Originally, it had offices in Singapore and Hong Kong, but currently they are in the United Arab Emirates, where they were also formally incorporated.

In order to stand out from the crowded market of cryptocurrency exchanges, Bybit employs a number of strategies. The main difference is that Bybit functions primarily as a derivatives exchange. Simple trades can be executed, but the entire software is geared towards margin and futures trading at larger leverage, with all of the associated increased risks and potential rewards.

Derivatives for Bybit

Bybit provides four main categories of derivatives. A futures contract is a legally binding agreement to purchase or sell an asset at a defined price at a future date. You may be familiar with futures contracts from non-crypto trading. Traders attempt to go long by foreseeing a rise in price, allowing them to buy at a lower cost than everyone else, or short by foreseeing a decline, allowing them to sell at a higher cost than everyone else.

A futures contract that never expires is known as a perpetual contract. As long as you have the funds to cover the funding fees (see “Bybit Funding Fees”), you could theoretically keep it forever without selling it. Perpetual contracts are not risk-free; if the asset price decreases dramatically, you could lose a lot of money in financing costs.

Bybit also offers inverse perpetual contracts, which instead specify a cryptocurrency for the final purchase. Normally, futures contracts are fulfilled in fiat money. These are useful if you wish to expand the exposure to Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency through your derivatives.

You can finally buy USDC options. Options contracts have an expiration date, just like futures contracts, but the holder is not required to perform the contract after it has reached its maturity date. As implied by the name, all of Bybit’s fulfilment is done in USDC.
